Call it the Pacific Rim Partnership. It’s no secret that sales of the Napa Valley appellation are on the rise in Asia, and the valley itself is an increasingly popular destination for our neighbors across the Pacific. In fact, the number of places to experience a taste of Asia is growing here in wine country. If you’ve got a yen for eating or drinking like they do in the Far East, here are a few suggestions.
Two Birds/One Stone, St. Helena. Upvalley’s newest restaurant, located in the old Freemark Abbey building north of town, features California-inspired yakitori by chefs Sang Yoon and Douglas Keane.
Morimoto, Napa. Whether you go for its raw bar or a Japanese A-5 Wagyu steak, this is also the place to sample a wide selection of premium sakes and high-end cuisine.
Eiko’s, Napa. With locations both downtown and at the Oxbow Public Market, come here for wonderful bento boxes or “Japanese tapas.”
Miminashi, Napa. Just opened last spring, this “Izakaya-style” Japanese pub offers a great selection of yakitori, noodles, and rice, as well as some raw items. Also check out the house-made waffle cone or bowl with different flavors of soft cream and an assortment of toppings like candied ginger or sesame honeycomb candy. Redd, Yountville. The menu isn’t exclusively Asian, but try ordering the sashimi of Hamachi with sticky rice and edamame or the yellowfin tuna tartare with asian pear and avocado.
Bar Terra, St. Helena. While it’s not a strictly Asian menu, chef-owner Hiro Sone offers an amazing ramen bowl, a broiled sake-marinated black cod, and Shoyu braised beef short ribs.
RaeSet, Napa. Fusion dishes inspired by Asian street food, including house-made steamed bao buns, a wide selection of rice and noodle bowls, and 22 craft brews on tap.
Sushi Mambo, Napa. Not just sushi here, folks, but also teriyaki, tempura, ramen, katsu, and other cooked dishes. It also has a Calistoga location that does focus on raw sushi.
Sushi Haku, Napa. Feel like take-out? You can order online at this place, both sushi and hot dishes like teriyaki and noodles.
Himalayan Sherpa Kitchen, St. Helena. From curry dishes to sizzling tandooris, this place is a warm and spicy alternative to a Japanese raw bar.
